About
Alcocks
About us: the Alcock group of companies
Alcocks commenced operating in 1853 when the founder Henry Alcock settled in Melbourne, Victoria. Since that time the core activity of the business has consisted in the manufacture and/or refurbishing and repair of billiard tables and the provision of billiards equipment. Alcock billiard tables were recognised as an exceptionally high quality item as early as 1864 when they were publicly praised by the then World Billiards Champion, John Roberts, during a visit he made from England to the colonies of Australasia. The quality of Alcock tables was again recognised in 1867, when the incumbent Victorian government commissioned the company to manufacture a special table for presentation as a gift to the then Duke of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria, who was visiting the colonies at that time. Please refer to page about us: Alcocks and Billiards in Australia

Over many years since Alcock tables have won major prizes in furniture exhibitions in several countries including the UK, New Zealand, the United States and Australia.

Since the later part of the 19th century, Alcock tables have been selected for use in a great number of major billiards and snooker tournaments and championships including those at national and international levels. Indeed as recently as 1998 Alcock tables were used exclusively at the International Billiard & Snooker Federation World Billiards Championships. During 1999 and 2000 an Alcock table was used for the final of the Australian Open Snooker Championship.

Today Alcock tables are found at such locations as The Lodge, Canberra; Victorian Government House and the Parliament of Victoria. They are installed at the Australian Club, Tattersall’s Club and City Tattersall’s Club, Sydney, the Melbourne Club, the Australian Club, the Melbourne Savage Club, Athenaeum Club, Naval and Military Club, RACV Club, etc, in Melbourne, as well as a very large number of clubs and corporate and service organisations throughout Australia. Alcock tables are situated in many thousands of domestic homes throughout this country, from Darwin to Perth, from Adelaide to Townsville, in Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart, Launceston, Brisbane and many regional centres and towns.

Alcock tables are also found in a number of other countries: Austria, USA, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Noumea, New Zealand, Japan, etc.

During 1988, Alcock’s joined forces with the highly respected Sydney billiards company, Heiron & Smith Billiards Pty Limited, a firm established there in 1883. Since this time our companies have together supplied quality billiard tables to most parts of Australia. Today Alcock’s and Heiron & Smith have agents and distributors in northern New South Wales, Brisbane, Hobart and Perth. For those wishing to obtain Alcock tables in those areas. Please refer to the agents’ page.

Alcock’s also continues to distribute equipment and accessories relating to billiard tables, quite a number of the items being exclusive to the company.

For further information, enquiries can be addressed to either Alcock’s at 700 High Street, East Prahran, Victoria 3181, or Heiron & Smith, at 128 Blaxland Road, Ryde, New South Wales 2112.
